And all enemies have disadvantage on their pp in dim light unless they have truesight, tremorsense or blindsight. Yes noise can alert but i would always designate a main roll and a disadvantage dice. Your hearing is the main roll. And disadvantage is sight. WebIf the DM calls for a perception check, then that obviously gives them a hint that something's out there. Basically Active Perception check is up to the players, and if they don't make the choice to roll on their own, then the DM checks against Passive Perception. Edit: So basically the DM never asks for a Perception check.

WebFirst, use passive perception. Remeber it's +5 for advantage or -5 for disadvantage (such as dim light for those darkvision folks). Unless they're actively looking for something, they don't roll. As for those traps that "need a roll to find," no they don't. It's not uncommon to have PCs with PP in the 15 - 20 range.
